Byungyoon Lee is currently Senior Research Fellow. Dr. Lee is a frequent contributor to the media and a distinguished expert in the area of banking and finance.
Prior to joining the KIF, Dr. Lee served as an Economist at the Bank of Korea from 1990 to 2001. He worked aa an advisor to the Chairman of the Office of Policy Advisor to the President from 2004 to 2005. He was a co-editor of the Review of Financial Economics from 2006 to 2007, a Board Member of the Korea Competition Forum from 2005 to 2007, and an Outside Director at Jinheung Savings Bank from 2007 to 2009. He was also a visiting scholar at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley from 2008 to 2009. He received the Korea University President's Medal in 1983 and a citation from the Minister of Finance and Economy in 2007.
His research areas span various aspects of finance, especially focusing on banking. He has authored or co-authored numerous papers, including "Financial Development and Economic Growth: The Role of Information Accumulation" (Economic Papers (2001)), "The Determinants of Foreign Banks' Entry in Korea and Its Effects on Korean Domestic Banks' Performance", (Economic Papers (2003)), "The Effects of Increase in Banking Market Concentration on the Resource Allocation of Banks to Manufacturing Industries" (Korea Institute of Finance (2003)), "The Effect of Financial Restructuring on the Degree of Competition of the Korean Banking Sector" (Economic Analysis (2003)), "A Study on the Bank Merger Guideline in Korea" (co-author, Korea Institute of Finance (2004)), "Effects of the Increased Presence of Foreign Capital in Korea, and Related Policies" (Korea Institute of Finance (2005)), "The Separation of Banking and Commerce: Current Situation and Issues", Review of Financial Economics (2006), "The Regulatory System of Unfair Practices by Financial Companies" (co-author, Korea Institute of Finance (2007)), "Improving Outside Director System in Banking Sector" (co-author, Korea Institute of Finance (2009)), and "The Increase in the Size of Banks in Korea and the Allocation of Enterprise Loans" (Korea Institute of Finance (2009)).

Byungyoon earned his BA and MA in economics from Korea University and his MA. and PhD in economics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
