Byung Duck Kim is a Senior Research Fellow, assuming this position after serving as Director General for Public Funds at the Ministry of Planning and Budget beginning in 2006. In his four years at the Ministry, he was in charge of the supervision, evaluation, and monitoring of all public funds in Korea, such as the National Pension Fund. Currently, Dr. Kim is the Senior Research Fellow of the Financial Markets & System Division. He previously has held various positions at the KIF since 1995, including Chief Editor, Head of the Non-Bank Financial Institution Team, and Director of the Financial Skills Network Center. His research interests span various financial issues such as pension funds, asset management, financial institutions, markets, and regulations.
He has also played an active role as a member on a variety of government committees, including the Committee for Pool of Public Funds, the Committee for Public Funds Evaluation, the Committee for Public Enterprises Evaluation at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Asset Management Committee of the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation (KODIC), the Advisory Committee of the National Pension Fund and the National Athletics Promotion Fund, the Advisory Committee of the Board of Audit and Inspection, the Committee for Financial Regulation in the Prime Minister's Office, and the Committee for Credit Card Market Development at the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS).
Dr. Kim also brings ample experience from the private sector and markets as a non-executive Director of the Shinhan Credit Card Company, Korea Bond Evaluation Inc., e-value Inc., and as an Advisor to the presidents of Shinhan Bank and Busan Bank.
He has also contributed to academic associations as a Chief Editor for the Korea Journal of Money and Finance and as Director of the Korean Finance Association. Dr. Kim was born in 1962. He completed his undergraduate studies at Seoul National University and the University of Texas at Austin, and received his MA and PhD from the University of Minnesota. He has been married since 1995 and has three kids. His hobbies include hiking and biking.
